How we can help you

Your Skills Matter

Teachers, Social Workers, and Nurses all possess skills and traits that are highly transferable to a career in law enforcement.
Here are a few of the many examples of transferable skills and compatible assignments within the LAPD:

TEACHERS

Teachers’ ability to assist individuals with acquiring knowledge and demonstrating competency is an asset in several LAPD instructor assignments:

  • Academy Instructor: Instruct recruit officers to ensure they are academically and physically prepared to graduate the academy and enter field training at a geographic division.
  • Field Training Officer (FTO) Program: Train probationary police officers on the practical application of law and the fundamentals of policing.
  • In-Service Training Instructor: Instruct sworn personnel on various Department policies, procedures, and best practices.

SOCIAL WORKERS

Social Workers possess de-escalation and investigative skills critical to law enforcement encounters, particularly in assignments like:

  • Mental Evaluation Unit (MEU) Officer: Work closely with Department clinicians to evaluate persons experiencing mental health episodes that have resulted in emergency calls for service being generated.
  • Community Safety Partnership (CSP) Officer: Engage in relationship-based policing where police and community members, stakeholders, and organizations collaborate to improve quality of life issues, resolve disputes, reduce crime, offer wrap-around services, and bridge the gap between the police and the community.
  • Community Relations Officer (CRO): Instruct and prepare cadets for careers in law enforcement and community engagement.
  • Senior Lead Officer (SLO): Collaborates with community members and stakeholders to identify problems, resolve quality of life issues, and share information with patrol related to a car area.

NURSES

Specialized medical training is incredibly useful in the role of a law enforcement first responder, especially given the proportion of calls for service involving individuals suffering from injuries resulting from criminal activity, traffic collisions, and accidents. Law enforcement often arrives at these scenes well before our fire department partners, making it critical for officers to be well-versed in first aid/CPR.

  • Patrol Officer: Provide first-aid/CPR at scenes with injured persons.
  • Collision Investigator: Investigate traffic collisions resulting in moderate, severe, or fatal injuries.
